Minneapolis Star Tribune Files for Bankruptcy

Posted by tdepp on January 16, 2009

One of the best newspapers in the country in my opinion, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, has filed for bankruptcy protection.

From Mediabistro.com:

Minneapolis Newspaper Files for Bankruptcy (Star Tribune)
The Star Tribune, saddled with high debt and a sharp decline in print advertising, filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition Thursday night. Minnesota’s largest newspaper will try to use bankruptcy to restructure its debt and lower its labor costs.

This is going to be a really bad yearsfor the dead tree folks.

Breaking (For Real): Argus to Furlough Employees for One Week

Posted by tdepp on January 15, 2009

SD Watch just received a memo from a source about Argus Leader Publisher Randell Beck informing Argus staff that they will be made to take a one week unpaid furlough during the first quarter of 2009.

  • PDF Alert: Here is the memo and the FAQ prepared by Gannett–File argusfurloughs.pdf (108K)

According to Beck:

Considering the continuing economic difficulties our nation is facing, including right here in Sioux Falls, as well as the challenging forecast for the next several months, I believe this is far better than the alternative.  I view this as perhaps the fairest way for all of us, no matter our level or pay, to shoulder the responsibility for reducing expenses.  All employees in the community newspaper division will be required to go on furlough.  That includes me.

What is interesting is that the memo came out the same day that the Argus noted that a number of South Dakota companies were also issuing furloughs.  But no mention of the Argus.  Hmmm.

Will the last one to leave the Argus please turn out lights on the way out?

Old Man Winter to be Featured on KSFY-TV’s Wheel of Felons!

Posted by tdepp on January 15, 2009

My inside source tells me that Old Man Winter will be featured Friday on the 10 p.m. news on Wheel of Felons on KSFY-TV.

The reason? This week’s cold weather is absolutely criminal!

Photo: Take a good look at this man! He’s Old Man Winter, perpetrating criminal mischief against car batteries and inflicting frostbite on ill dressed citizens.

SD Watch’s Big Week of Media Whoredom

Posted by tdepp on January 13, 2009

When it snows, it pours like a ripped bag of flour.

Big media week here at South Dakota Watch Tower.

  • Tonight, 6 p.m., KSFY-TV–I’m discussing some proposed federal changes in employment law.  (No, I won’t be on Wheel of Felons, unfortunately.  And yes, the irony of this is not lost on me.)
  • Sometime this week, purplestates.tv–I shot a video (actually, videos) on the economy and other topics that the nice folks at purplestates.tv will turn into TV magic.  They are featuring 50 bloggers from 50 states in 50 days.
  • 10:30 a.m. CT and 10:30 p.m. CT, Sunday, KELOLAND-TV–My favorite Republican Joel Rosenthal and I will be on Inside KELOLAND to discuss just how great my Man Crush, President Barack Obama, will be for South Dakota, the nation, and the world.  Maybe I can work in some thoughts on Doug Lund while I’m there.

Live and direct, it’s South Dakota Watch on the air!  Stay tuned, fellow babies!
